Southwest Airlines has long been recognized for its low fares, friendly service, and strong community ties. But what many may not realize is how deeply the airline is investing in sustainability — from innovations in aviation fuel to bold recycling initiatives. In the Yampa Valley, these values are taking root through Southwest’s partnership with Yampa Valley Sustainability Council (YVSC), where the airline’s support is helping build resilience in Northwest Colorado.

Southwest Airlines at a Glance

Southwest Airlines, with nearly 80,000 employees and service to more than 120 destinations, is one of the nation’s largest carriers and is advancing its “Nonstop to Net Zero” strategy to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. The airline has set a goal to replace 10% of its jet fuel with sustainable aviation fuel by 2030, investing $30 million in LanzaJet, a SAF technology provider and producer known for its patented ethanol-to-SAF technology, and securing supply agreements with Valero and Neste to scale fuels made from waste sources, such as used cooking oil. And they aren’t stopping there. Southwest introduced bamboo cups, birch stir sticks, and expanded recycling programs, reducing plastic waste by 1.5 million pounds in 2024 alone.

Local Impact: Southwest + YVSC

Closer to home, Southwest’s partnership with YVSC helps drive climate solutions. Their support has empowered several of YVSC’s core programs:

  • Yampa Valley Recycles Depot: In 2024, more than 40,000 pounds of hard-to-recycle items (electronics, batteries, bulbs, and printer cartridges) were diverted from the landfill through the Yampa Valley Recycles Depot, which continues to remain the only place to recycle these items and continues to operate in part because of support from Southwest Airlines.
  • ReTree: Celebrating its 15th anniversary, in 2024, ReTree mobilized 140 volunteers to plant 340 cottonwood and alder trees along the Elk and Yampa Rivers. The program continues to restore riparian habitats and connect residents to hands-on climate solutions. This effect is amplified through the support of organizations in the community, including Southwest.

Fun Fact

Southwest’s entire business plan — now worth billions — was famously sketched on a cocktail napkin in a San Antonio bar. That same creative, people-centered spirit still drives the company’s approach to innovation and sustainability today.

Taking Off Together

Southwest Airlines and YVSC share a belief that meaningful change happens when communities and businesses come together. Whether it’s planting trees along the Yampa River or reducing plastic at 35,000 feet, this partnership is proof that bold ideas — and a lot of heart — can help us all move closer to a sustainable future.
